Different Types Of Distance Learning
Distance education in recent years, however, has turned a corner and become ever more accessible and accepted. A student can now gain a formal education from preschool through college or university and on to a masters degree and beyond without ever going to a single class in a brick and mortar classroom. The most traditional distance learning programs still use correspondence class styles, though many take advantage of technology in ways that haven`t been used before. Where materials in older correspondence classes were delivered via the postal system, the internet has changed that. Some reading materials, audio and visual media and assignments may be delivered via email or dedicated websites, and students use the same technology to communicate with their teachers. This being said, correspondence type courses haven`t changed in some fundamental ways – students typically still work independently, at their own pace, through the material. They follow a loose schedule, and have a lot of flexibility and freedom as to how to structure their days. More recently, some correspondence courses have morphed into online learning programs, and new ones have arisen in large numbers. These learning programs are structured around the technology, and most everything is distributed electronically. While some students still complete independent programs, many online programs use technology to bring students together for virtual classes, which, like more traditional schools, are scheduled classes students must attend, albeit not physically. These programs tend to provide more structure and follow a tighter schedule than correspondence style classes. Students exploring distance learning will discover that there are many benefits, including working on their own schedule, from the comfort of their own home. This being said, there is such variety in distance learning programs that some research is required when exploring their options. This can be more complicated since distance learning programs are not bound by geography, widening the choice of academic programs to a great degree and making it difficult to chose.
