Different Ways To Cope With The Death Of A Child
Many people who have lost a child tend to be extremely hard on themselves during the grieving process. Parents will blame themselves for things not going the way they had planned them or for not spending enough time with the children or things of that nature. Now is not the time to beat yourself up. Allow yourself to mourn and realize that you will need to take some time away from everyday life so that you can sort out what you are feeling emotionally. One of the things that tends to happen to parents who lose a child is they become very angry and tend to take out their anger on one another. This also is not a healthy expression of your grief. This is a time when both partners need to be there to comfort and love each other instead of blame shift or rage at one another. During this time of loss, it is important that you and your spouse set boundaries and guidelines for communication when it comes to dealing with the situation. It is important to keep in mind that people, especially men and women, grieve differently from each other. If you are a wife, you may need to give your husband a little space from time to time. This does not mean that you disengage, but that you allow him to process the grief in his own way. It is also a good idea for both parents to read a few books that discuss the topic of dealing with the loss of a child. It can be therapeutic to read other people’s stories of how they dealt with the death of a child. This may offer some comfort and hope when it is desperately needed. You might want to try commemorating your child with a comfort gift that includes a picture and some comforting words or verses of poetry etched on it.
