Digital Photography For Dummies
Part 1 The first part of photography is your camera. This is very important because not knowing how to use your camera can ruin great shots. Knowing the right way to use your camera gives you much more freedom to take great pictures. Your camera most likely has automatic and manual modes. Now, automatic mode is great for simple photos, however, it has major limitations. To take great shots you are going to want to start experimenting with manual mode. Shutter and Aperture The shutter and aperture are the two most important manual controls you are going to want to learn how to use. Shutter controls how long light is let in (in seconds) and the aperture controls the amount of light let in. If you are in a dark area you want to use a longer shutter and bigger aperture. A bright area means you don’t need as much light and can use a faster speed and smaller aperture setting. Part 2 The second part of photography is taking great shots compositionally. Now, this is where the creativity and artistry comes in. Photography is a great way to express yourself. When you take a photo be sure to keep it simple. Have ONE primary point of most interest. Too many subjects makes photos look cluttered, confusing, and boring. Now, one very easy and no nonsense tip for photography is to avoid the center. Simply place your subject to the left or right of the shot and see how better shots come out. Or if you are photographing a person place their eyes anywhere but the center. You can place the persons body dead center, however, be sure their eyes are above the center, below, or to the left or right of it.
