Disaster Planning | Why Let Nature Bully You?
• You’re enjoying a good book – BANG! Tornado rips the roof of your house and takes the kids off to OZ. • You’re collecting seashells at the beach – POW! Hurricane swoops in and takes grandma to a better place • You’re at home watching Coronation Street – Whammo! Terrorists conduct a home invasion and steel your antique china No matter what life throws at you – you must be prepared to deal with it; and in order to deal with these situations effectively – you need disaster planning. So what is disaster planning and why is it so important? Disaster planning is not something based on paranoia. It is a responsible approach to protecting yourself, your loved ones and your property. It’s a plan of action you can take should the unforeseen happen to you unexpectedly. If you live the southern U.S.A you are probably no stranger to hurricanes and their deadly rampages – but do you know what to do should you be confronted by one? If you live in northern Canada you’re probably no stranger to freezing temperatures and mountains of snow – but do you know how to stay safe if you’re snowed in without electricity and communications abilities? A little planning can go a long way and preparing ahead of time can save lives. It’s important to have all the essentials in place should you ever need them and be sure to periodically check your supplies to ensure they are still in good shape (they could be there for a long time – which is a good thing) Food and water aren’t the only items to consider – think about batteries, radios, flashlights, blankets and candles. If you live in a more isolated area, consider power generators and fuel supplies. Due to the fact that these disasters are hard to predict, it’s important to plan for any emergency and keep your gear in a convenient and accessible location – should you need to leave your house or remain there – placing your emergency items in a duffle bag would be a good idea. Make sure your family is aware of the disaster kit and how to use the items contained within it. Also, should you need to leave your home – choose a common meeting place to congregate – a lost person can cause even more panic.
