The sciatic nerve which is an inch long and ¾ inch in diameter is the longest and the largest nerve in the body. During the initial stage of sciatica, the pain goes down the back of the thigh as far as the toes. However, if the pain shoots down the front of your leg, you may have muscle spasms of the quadriceps muscles.

It is a little known fact that sciatica actually falls into the category of pain known as ‘referred pain’. The source of the pain might be at one location whereas the brain registers the pain coming from a different location. The reason is the brain registers the pain from where the sciatica nerve goes. Muscular tension is usually caused by such nervous tension. The muscles need to be made more responsive to voluntary control. Sciatica pain can be healed effectively by developing sufficient control of muscular activity.

Your spinal cord is like a bow and your back muscles are like the string. Poor posture, unhealthy diets etc. contribute towards creating a constant tension between the bow and the bowstring. This puts extra pressure on the lower part of the spinal column. This causes contraction of the sciatica nerve leading to inflammation and pain. In simpler terms, inflammation of the sciatic nerve due to some injury causes symptoms called sciatica.

Piriformis syndrome and common sciatica are two most-typical types of sciatica. The former is rarer as compared to common sciatica. The piriformis syndrome is usually caused by prolonged sitting. It might also be a result of increased pressure on the piriformis muscle. A common symptom is pain in the buttock.

There are quite a few methods used to decrease sciatica pain. There are therapies, exercises, muscle relaxant drugs, visualization exercises, laser surgery, chiropractic manual manipulation etc. Another cause of sciatica is when a sciatica disc gets ruptured. This is usually a rare case. However, the severity of the pain makes people believe that some permanent damage has happened. Generally, surgeries are recommended for the previous two forms of sciatica. However, surgeries should always be the last resort.

Let’s have a look on the different ways to improve muscular control. The body should have the ability to create and relax muscular tension. Therapeutic exercises provide the maximum benefit when focus is maintained both on building strength an improving control. You need to develop the ability to feel your muscles and improving on muscular control on the same time. The muscle movements need to be well coordinated in order to avoid both cramping and weakness.

Simple somatic exercises are safe to do even with disc problems. However, the movements need to be gentle, slower, smoother and softer. You should not allow your muscles to force or stretch. You would be in a position to relax more completely as you develop freedom of movement. Workouts should not be mechanical or too fast. Progress comes at a slower pace.
