Up-selling is a great way to maximize profits and it would be a waste if you are not taking advantage of the opportunity. After you have cleared the difficult hurdle by convincing a prospect to make a purchase, there would be less resistance when you recommend something else that compliment.
Making a sale is one natural process if you have good products. But whatever your niche may be, there will always be competition. This literally mean that sales will be harder to come by when more similar products surface. Therefore, you should use your product exposure to enhance the sales values. If your product is price at $17, you could easily double or triple the sales value by up-selling.
Some people might be put off with up-selling and think that this is not the right thing to do. But if established companies are also up-selling on a daily basis, it just translate that this is a workable method. For example, Mc Donald’s staffs are trained to up-sell every customers they served. Have you experience upsizing your meal or getting an extra apple pie when all you wanted was a cheese burger?
Whatever you plan to up-sell, it has to compliment the initial purchase. The up-sell product or service must be something that will benefit the customers. Take Zuji.com for example, after someone purchased an air ticket with them, Zuji.com will up-sell their hotel packages and travel insurance at a discount. This is win-win situation for both parties as Zuji.com get to increase the sales value while customer saves the trouble to source for hotels and insurance.
If you up-sell non related product or service, you might come across as hard selling and this will leave a negative impression to the customer. Customer will not buy if you are more concern about your own pocket. Take care of customers’ needs and up-sell only those product or service that will truly benefit them.
Another method of up-sell is to use the One Time Offer (OTO) promotion. After customer buy your product, up-sell them by offering a One Time Offer to purchase related products with tremendous discounts or bonuses. By mentioning that the offer will cease thereafter, they may purchase it with the fear of losing out. If the up-sell product is something valuable, the customer will even thank you and believe that you have their needs in mind.
Now you know that up-selling is a great way to maximize your profits, do not give up any opportunity to increase the sales value. After every sales made, always follow up with the customers to keep them in the loop of any future development.
