Do’s & Don’ts Of Implementing Your List Building Strategies

Turn left at the first corner after taking a right behind the store that is a block from the first freeway entrance sign on the left.

Whew! What was that again?

Turn left…

No no no… perhaps you can say what you just said without error but leaving it for someone to carry out, now there’s a trick to be sure.

And sometimes, it’s easier to talk about what a person wants to do with their list building efforts than it is to actually implement those procedures. However, once you have determined your objective for having a list the next step is indeed implementation.

One thing you DO NOT want to implement is a strategy of using spam to generate your audience and we aren’t talking about canned spam here. Perhaps knowing what spam is and is not would be helpful.

The other day a friend sent me an e-mail to listen to a specific recorded call. Since they did not BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) the addresses it was clear to me that this e-mail had only been sent to a select few of their distribution list friends. Certainly that is not spam, or is it?

WikiPedia
SPAM: Unsolicited or undesired bulk electronic messages.

Did I request this e-mail? No.
Did I want this e-mail? No.
Was this e-mail sent to a group of people? Yes.

Spam is both unethical and illegal, stay away from it.

What you can and should do is make your list valuable to the niche audience you are attempting to reach. Don’t just be another boring list. Offer value in exchange for the time it takes your reader to read your latest list posting. If you approach your list building efforts with the idea that everyone is simply going to want to buy buy from you, you’ll likely be very successful in watching them go bye bye instead.

Finally, look for people that will be interesting additions to your list. People in the niche field you are focusing on. You never know when you might have a new E-book, Tele-seminar, or the like ready to be created from golden members being part of your list. Sometimes the people on your list are the very one’s your list will be excited to hear about. Whatever the case, build your list for long-term relationships with your niche audience.
