Does All Natural Beef Taste Better?
Mark Schatzker, who wrote the report, spent a long time talking to cattle ranchers and trying to get their opinion on the matter. He also found out a lot about the process of raising beef and the fact that many calves spend much of their lives in an overcrowded environment, a picture that has been brought home to us by PETA on more than one occasion. Because of the environment they are in, commercially farmed cows eat a lot of corn and grains, which can adversely affect the taste of the beef, although the diet can also promote weight gain. Schatzker compared all natural beef with beef that came from corn fed cows, with all the cuts being classed as USDA prime. The winner would seem clear before the meat is actually cooked, as beef from corn fed cows is marbled, and beef from grass fed cattle has little fat. However, once the meat has been cooked, the results are different, and according to Schatzker and his team, organic beef was much better tasting. Schatzker maintains that whereas the marbling effect is desirable, ultimately it is the taste that matters, and meat from cows that consume grass definitely tastes better.
