Does Hair Matter?

Men don’t take well to hair loss. The moment they see strands of their precious mane on the shower drain, they panic and grab all the hair loss treatment products they can get their hands on. Justin Hawking, the lead singer of English rock band The Darkness, said it perfectly, “…hair loss is a lot like death for most men”.

There are many different reasons why men would gladly circle the earth on foot if it means being able to maintain thick hair. First is that their level of confidence is directly proportional to how much hair they have; when they lose their locks, they lose their confidence too.


Another reason is that men associate a full set of hair with youth, power and virility---attributes they never want to admit losing.

More than anything else however, the biggest factor that drives men to buy hair growth products is the perception that thick, healthy hair is one of the qualities women look for in their partners. A survey conducted by Psychology Today Magazine for example, stated that fifty-two percent of men think that women would say that they “generally find bald men unattractive”.

So is losing one’s hair really “the end” for men?

Not really. According to studies, most women value personality and character more than physical attributes. In fact, according to the same study by Psychology Today, only 13% of women whose partner had a full set of hair would be “very upset” if their husband/boyfriend lose their hair.

Consider the case of Sir Sean Connery for example. At age 60 and with very little hair left, the Scottish actor was still awarded the “Sexiest Man Alive” title by People magazine in 1989. And he’s not the only bald man who’s gotten the adulation of women everywhere. MSN lists 12 other “sexy bald men” that includes, surfer Kelly Slater, tennis champ Andre Agassi, filmmaker Marc Foster and actors Vin Diesel and Taye Diggs.

The point here is, a man’s hair is not his be all and end all; there is his sense of humor, his intelligence, his interests, his kindness, his charm, his talents. Give any woman a choice between a boring, thick-haired man with a surly temperament and a charming, funny and intelligent bald man, and she will most definitely rather enjoy the company with the latter than be with the former.

This is not to say however that you should automatically go bald. If you like running your fingers through your thick mane or it you think that your confidence and attitude is infinitely better with a full set of hair, then by all means continue with your hair growth treatment.

If however, you don’t wish to bother with wigs, combovers or treatments and you think you can pull off the bald look, then, to quote Sean Connery, “ just let your head be”.
