Does Your Jack Russell Bolt Out The Front Door At Every Chance?

Why does my Jack Russell tend to run away?

Don't take it personally if your Jack Russell likes to run off, as this tendency is a matter of genetics. Jacks were bred as hunters and trained to run ahead of their masters to catch a fallen prey, so today Jacks still think this is their job. Such a penchant, coupled with their already energetic personality, can propel your dog far into the distance, which may be great exercise, but isn't very safe for your lovable pet.

Protecting your dog from running away

For your dog's own safety, it's critically important that your Jack Russell receives proper obedience training. Once your dog responds to basic commands and understands that you are the most dominate member of his pack, your dog will be far less likely to run away; this just takes patience and getting inside your dog's head.Such training is utterly essential. It's possible to do it yourself through a combination of positive reinforcement and persistence, but when it comes to Jack Russells it's often best to get the experts in. Begin this process early where your dog will be with other rambunctious puppies, that way nobody will judge you for having a wild little dog and, in fact, you may pick up helpful suggestions from other puppy owners.Make sure to practice any techniques at home as well. This should always include teaching your dog to come at your command, and you do that by teaching him that coming back is rewarding. Some commands can be practiced in conjunction, such as having your dog sit and then stay seated while you move about the house and then finally prompting your dog to come. If your dog can satisfy these commands he'll receive a treat. Your dog will quickly associate being obedient with being rewarded which will encourage good behavior and reduce the risk of him running off.

More Training Secrets

As you train your pet, keep in mind that Jack Russells are easily distracted. Light and consistent sessions will keep your dog from getting bored and likely foster the best results

Another bit of advice is to refrain from chasing your dog if he starts to run off. If you chase him it seems to your dog that you're playing some kind of game, compelling your dog to run more, so tell your dog that you aren't playing by staying put. Instead of thinking about how to catch your dog, think instead about not giving him an opportunity to run away. Keep your dog on a leash until he's been fully trained so that you don't risk any sudden departures.Another important point is that owners cannot punish their Jacks after they run off. If you reprimand him when he comes back (or once you've caught him) it's like you're punishing him for returning, and that's never going to help stop your Jack Russell running away. Concentrate on reminding your dog that you are the Alpha and reviewing his commands until running away is no longer a problem.

In brief, the natural instincts of the Jack Russell makes running away more frequent than many owners would like. When you consider their athleticism and their propensity to chase it may seem impossible to resolve this issue, but steady training will eventually keep your dog obedient and safe.
