Does The Current Health Reform Do Enough To Protect Your Choice?

Who wants to wait on hold for 45 minutes during a phone call to the Social Security office, and when you finally reach someone, they're usually edgy and have attitude because all day they've been dealing with angry people who've wasted most of the last hour waiting for somebody to help them answer a question. You're never going to talk to this government employee again, and they know it. There's no personality to your phone call. This person sits in a call center all day long and says the same things, over and over, day after day, year after year. This is the usual experience when you call the Social Security Administration along with most other government ran agencies such as Medicare, Internal Revenue Service or the Department of Motor Vehicles. And now, the federal government wants to do it all over again, this time to health insurance. Most Americans agree health insurance needs to be reformed, but the current reform ignores too much and includes several things that are unnecessary and waste tax dollars.

The current health reform has nothing in it that protects a persons right to choose to purchase their insurance by using a health insurance agent. Health plans and health insurance as we know it is changing significantly very soon and the governments approach to it is an exchange and if you have a question, we'll create another government ran call center...so you can wait on hold for the next 45 minutes. Why would anybody want another government agency ran call center? The governments track record has never been consumer or costumer service oriented. The current system in place, if you have to get health insurance on your own, you can choose to contact a health insurance agent for help. If your a business, the agent usually always meets you at the place of business, helps you understand the options and then helps enroll each employee and answers their questions. Can we all expect the same service from a government ran agency? When it comes to health insurance enrollment and service, we already have a system in place that works and has worked well some time, therefore it shouldn't change. Instead, it should be preserved.

Someone who has a business interest in a transaction cares more about customer service than a government ran agency ever will. It's the agents job to protect the consumer and that's what a good agent will do for their client. When you have an agent, you have your very own personal representative who took oaths to protect you and always be on your side. An agent is supposed to go to bat for you when you have a claim. With an agent, you get the same person each time who knows you and your family; who doesn't have to ask for your social security number or policy number to be able to recall your file. Often times, an agent can recognize you by just hearing your voice. If you prefer, your agent will come to your home or meet you at a mutual agreed upon location. Personal service is what an agent provides you and the current reform doesn't do enough to protect the consumers choice to ask an agent for help when you choose your health plan. Agents help you to pay the least possible premium while obtaining the best possible benefits.

As all the changes take place over the next few years, these are changes that most people can't fully comprehend and there will be questions. Insurance is confusing. The question we should all ask ourselves, do we want to wait on the phone line on hold wasting time waiting for a new inexperienced government agency get my questions answered? Or, do I want the option of choosing a licensed agent who has many years of experience in the industry before reform?

Most agree agents are important and prefer to keep them rather than ever need to deal with the new proposed call centers and government agencies. America wants something that won't take away their freedom or ability to choose. America wants a government that will listen to them. We have so far been ignored during the health reform. Americans want service. It's time for our government officials to listen to what the majority of us want. We don't need another government call center. It's simply a waste to spend tax dollars on something that's already been successfully established. The wheel is already round, let's not change it. Instead, preserve it.
