Doing Competitive Research On Your Website Topic

If you have put together a vague description of the site you would like to create, it is time to expand on this. The first step of putting a website plan together is to do competitive research. In this article we will learn how to properly do competitive research.

The first and most important step in planning is to research the competition. Not only does this let you know what you are up against, it also gives you good ideas on what you can do with your site. Trust me, when you have a clear picture of what the competition is doing, it makes your job of building a quality site so much easier. We will go over an example of how to do this now.

Assume that we have chosen to build a site about candles, specifically detailing the process of how candles are made. Great. Let's go to Google and search: how candles are made. There will be all kinds of pages that show up here. Some of these pages are stores, some are articles, and some you can tell are websites dedicated to discussing candles. Pay attention to all of them, but especially the ones dedicated to articles about candles. These are the ones that will be your most direct competition. You will want to open all of the ones that seem interesting or relevant to our site.

At this point it isn't required that you write down anything about your competition, but you are certainly welcome to do so. For now, just get a good idea of what these sites are talking about, how their content is organized, what designs they use, and the overall themes of what they are trying to present. Right now, your role is to be a sponge and soak up all the information that you can about candles.
