Don't Flush Your Money Down The Drain

Conserving water is not only an easy way to "go green," it can also keep more green in homeowners' pockets.

Since the flushing of toilets, running of faucets and showers, and filling of bathtubs are everyday actions that, if altered, can have a big effect on the monthly water bill, Fluidmaster conducted a survey to flush out homeowners' perceptions about water conservation, starting, where else, but in the bathroom, specifically the toilet.

Nearly all homeowners (95 percent) consider water conservation to be an important topic and are interested in learning more about how to be more water-conscious.

In addition, many homeowners (88 percent) are aware that fixing a leaky toilet can help save money and water, yet often it remains the last task on the home improvement list.

Leaks can sound as though water is running inside the tank and can cause the toilet to turn on and off without being flushed. These leaks can add up over the course of a year, affecting both the environment as well as a homeowner's utility bill. The water waste from one leaky toilet can fill a backyard swimming pool within one year.

Americans actually drink very little (less than two percent) of our processed "drinking water"-the rest is used on lawns, in washing machines, cooking, bathing and in toilets. When compared to all the other uses of water in the home, a leaky toilet is the main culprit. It can waste hundreds of gallons of water a day if not properly repaired. Yet, in a recent survey of more than 1,000 homeowners, nearly one out of five people (19 percent), suspected they had at least one toilet that was not working properly in their residence, but have yet to repair it.

Water waste with toilets can usually be traced back to one of two components: Fill or Flush.
