When you first learn how to play the acoustic guitar, one of the very things you should be taught is how to properly hold the guitar. Here is a quick guide for you to use to check and make sure you are holding your guitar properly.
Remember, when you learn how to play the acoustic guitar, the right positioning is imperative in order to get the right sound.
1. Sit in a comfortable chair that has no arms on it but provides you with plenty of support for your back. Make sure that you have plenty of room around you to move both arms and hold your guitar without it banging on anything.
2. Settle the guitar naturally in your lap with the back of it touching your chest and the body resting on your right leg. Use the body’s indentation to rest it on your leg.
3. If you are holding the guitar correctly, the thickest string should be at the top while the thinnest is at the bottom. Turn your guitar around if this is not the case.
4. Grip the neck of your guitar with your left hand gently so that the thumb is resting behind the guitar neck and supporting your fingers. Your fingers should be floating above the strings ready to place in the right position for a chord.
5. Rest your right hand around the guitar body coming in from the top across the strings where you will be strumming.
6. You are ready to place your fingers on your left hand on the strings in a chord to strum the strings and begin your lesson on how to play the acoustic guitar.
Holding your guitar should feel natural, so if something doesn’t feel right you can shift your position into a more comfortable one in order to play. Make sure your guitar is not too big for your body as well. Otherwise, you will have trouble holding it.
