Don't Let Stress Push You Into Depression, Get Into Yoga!

They say that exercises like biking, yoga, brisk walking or jogging can lift us out of depression. We even hear disparaging comments so many times that we start wondering if it is merely the judgment of those who prefer to say that? Or are these statements backed by valid, stable scientific research pointing out to exercise being of real help to those who are afflicted with depression?

In reality, there have been considerable research affirming exercises like yoga (and other forms) to be one way of curing depression. The Department of Health and Human Services published, in 2008, the Summary of the Physical Activity Guidelines which confirms the truth in the various researches proving that regular "exercisers" have adapted a more upbeat perspective and reported an abatement of their depression symptoms.

You must also be careful in choosing the type of exercise that you will go into. The exercise forms that have been famous for their healing assistance range from moderately challenging vis-a-vis very light physical activity, like aerobic exercises which reportedly integrate strengthening elements. Consistent practice of yoga is reportedly one of the most effective treatments of depression.

There are many researches that assert yoga's claim of handling emotional well-being and treatment of depression. Some of the validating data presented shows the levels of cortisol (a primary stress hormone) in the bloodstream drop after doing a yoga routine. There is a later validated study, that of yoga's ability to decrease serotonin levels.

A 2009 evaluation study of 54 participants before and after 2 weeks of yoga performance was compared against each other. The results reveal 64% of the participants' mood disturbances went down and 53% said their depression symptoms had decreased.

A popular writer on yoga states that yoga works for depression healing by taking the focus of the mind away from the negative thoughts towards the activity itself. She also suggests practicing the breathing exercises of yoga as depression therapy. Exercises like these move the vagus nerve, the one nerve said to lower one's depression symptoms. One particular breathing method is reported to result in as much as a 73% reversal of major depressions.

Researches conducted and advice from yoga mentors assert the effectiveness of yoga in diminishing depression and raising the emotional mood to the positive. The kind or particular technique is not as critical a factor as much as what makes you feel more at ease. An authority on yoga advices looking for a yoga instructor who'll be able to "make you feel, when you walk out the door, like your life has changed in that moment. And you are renewed and full of life.”

Newbies to yoga are also warned against changing their current medications. Regardless of seeing positive changes soon after, it is advisable to wait for at least 9 months of consistent yoga performance before considering quitting on your current prescribed anti-depressants.

Go and discuss with your doctor how to go about finding a yoga instructor who can lead you from depression into wellness. Let yoga rid you of your present blues up to forever!
