Drain Repair In The Home

The most common household chore is drain repair. Drain systems remove water and waste from a home. A drain system also recycles water and brings it in and out of a home. When these drains become corroded, clogged or cease to function for whatever reason it can cause some serious problems for the day to day functions of your home.

First, a household drain consists of an assembly of the sink, bath tub, toilet or shower. These pipes that form the drain run down and usually through the base of the home and outside underground till they empty out into a much larger drainage system. The usual common drain is shaped like a “U” right under the sink for example. This U-shaped fixture is bent this way to trap most of the sediment that creates drain blockages and makes emptying the drain of this collected residue easier by simply unfastening the U-shaped drain and cleaning it out.

The most common problem and easiest to solve is the blockage. Most clogs occur in the U shaped trap of a pipe drain. It is usually easy to tell when the drain is blocked in this manner. First the sink will back up with water or the draining of the sink will seem slow. The first thing to do is use a plunger to try and create suction so the blockage or clog breaks up and flows though the trap. Sometimes a plumbing auger is needed to force the sediment to break up. Other times there are simple fluids which when poured down your sink will be absorbed by the collected clog and break up the sediment making it flow easier down the drain.

Most jobs are the same basic steps regardless of what they are. Sometimes the drains leak, as with a bathroom drain. This would in most cases require the stopper to be changed and replaced. First you need to remove the stopper form the drain. Sometimes this is a pull tap stopper or other older models it is a screw and twist model.

Once you have the stopper pulled free you need to clean it. Usually gunk from built up soap and hair form sediment that collects around the end of the stopper. Clean this away and cheap the rubber O-ring. Sometimes the O-ring needs replacing as well; it usually good to replace an O-ring every year or so for water will cause rubber to corrode faster. Rinse the stopper once completed and align back into place, push down and screw in tight. Run hot water through your drain just to be sure nothing went wrong.
