The data on a DVD recorder is encoded in the form of small pits and humps in the track of the disc which is the same as VCD recorder. The size of pits and humps in DVD recorder is much smaller than in VCD recorders. So the DVD recorder can store more data. The humps are having 320nm width.
The main drawback of a VCD (Video compact disc) recorder is storage capacity. It records only 700 mega bytes of data onto a disc but, a DVD (Digital video disc) recorder can record up to 4.7 Giga bytes of data onto a single disc. DVD recorder can record over 6 times the amount of data stored in VCD recorder.
The DVD recorder utilizes 96k samples per second and 24 bits per sample. In other words, there are more than twice as many samples per second and 256 times more quantization levels. In the case of VCD recorder the sampling rate is 44.1k samples per second, and the analog signal is converted to a 16-bit binary number at each sample.

Nowadays Dual layer DVD recorders are coming with multiple recording technologies which can perform faster than VCD recorder. Dual layer recording system increases the space of storing data. It can store up to 9 Giga bytes of data.
The cost of both VCD and DVD recorder are the same when compared and that too it is dropping day by day. A full movie can be stored in a single DVD recorder but the VCD recorder can't store a full movie. It requires the additional disc.

DVD writer can perform writing operation on both VCD and DVD recorder. The VCD writer writes only on VCD recorder. The writing speed of DVD recorder is much higher than the VCD recorder. DVD recorder can write two times faster than VCD recorder. It is advised to write at lower speed to have longer life.
