Driving Phobia - How To Overcome Your Fear Of Driving

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer from a driving phobia, does this mean that you are destined forever to sit in the passenger seat of cars? or is there anything you can do to overcome your fear of driving a car?

depending on how serious your fear is, there are a number of things that you can do to help reduce and eventually overcome your phobia.

start by getting accustomed to sitting behind the steering wheel. you can do this in a parking lot or any other time the vehicle isn't in motion. if your phobia is mild, this could be enough to overcome it as you'll begin to get used to being in control of a vehicle, albeit one that isn't going anywhere soon.

learn to relax "on demand". chances are that your heart starts beating faster at the thought of driving a car. learn a relaxation trick such as deep breathing to calm yourself down. with a bit of practice, you'll begin to be a bit calmer when you're faced with the prospect of driving a car.

find a non-critical driving buddy. you want someone who is going to be supportive, not someone who will bite your head off as soon as you do the slightest thing wrong. practice driving with them at a quiet time of day, on quiet streets or even on a local piece of unused tarmac if that's available. agree with your buddy that if you get too worried, they'll take over the controls and get you back home safely.
