Drug Addiction Issues And Charlie Sheen

It's no secret that Charlie Sheen was recently arrested on drug charges. That's basically old news and the fact that he has also been entered into a rehab facility is common knowledge as well. However, the interesting facts about all this is that not only did Charlie enter a drug rehab, so did his wife Brooke Mueller. The announcement about both him and Brooke was made on the 24th of February this year when the article confirmed that he had entered a drug addiction treatment and recovery facility. It does raise a question though. What about their 11-month old twins? Who is taking care of them?
According to the source on the article, they do have a nanny (Sheen's parents and Brooke's mother) to care for the twins while both parents are going through the treatment and recovery process. Additionally, the twins are allowed to visit them while they are in rehab. So if you've been a concerned individual where their children are concerned, they are being well cared for and can see their parents whenever visiting times are going on.
The important thing to consider here is that both Charlie and Brooke have taken the right steps to finally shed their addictions, continue their careers, and most importantly, be there for their children and be more responsible parents in the process. Remember that the two most significant steps that individuals with substance addictions have to make is first admitting that a problem truly exists and then getting help for it, which the Sheen's have now done.
Treatment and recovery from alcohol and/or drug addiction is a lengthy process filled with numerous unpleasantries while you are becoming substance free for life. Consequently, one of the primary concerns is that once the individual has completed their drug treatment and recovery process, is what transpires after they have been discharged from the program. Oftentimes, when an individual returns home to their partners, that partner may (or may not) be alcohol and drug abusers themselves.
This sometimes results in a test of the individual's will and newfound substance-free lifestyle. In many instances, relapsing is inevitable as a result of going home to the abusing partner as the odds of them remaining clean and sober are diminished greatly. The obvious factor involved here is that Charlie and Brooke both need to make their sobriety the #1 priority in order to develop and promote a healthier environment for the twins. Nothing else should be higher on the priority list.
Another issue to consider is that even when Charlie and Brooke do come home once they are discharged from the treatment and recovery facility, if either of them relapses, that will put tremendous pressure on the other partner. Past research has proven that this typically results in the sober partner eventually relapsing themselves. This is especially true when the treatment and recovery program fails to address the emotional, mental, and physical issues which may have led to the addiction.
This is the key failure of so many alcohol/drug addiction treatment and recovery facilities out there today and why the majority of those facilities only experience about a 20% success rate (national average). Where Mueller and Sheen are concerned, once they are discharged from the rehab program, they are far from being out of the woods, so to speak. Every child deserves to have responsible and sober parents, and if Charlie and Brooke relapse then the issue of the children's best interests comes into play and they will best be cared for by other persons as they are now.
What is critical is that both Charlie and Brooke allow themselves the space and time to address the issues which led to relapses in the past, while at the same time continuing to work on their healing process. Plus, while they are both in rehab, the fact that they are allowed to see the twins is a positive. However, if these visits lead to distractions or added stress, those visits may be curtailed. Suffice it to say, a balance will need to be struck during the treatment and recovery process.
In most cases, individuals are not as fortunate as Sheen and Mueller and do not have the assets or resources so as to enter a treatment and recovery facility simultaneously and have to proceed on an individual basis. However, and most importantly, for the sake of any children that may be part of the equation, it is very critical that they both get clean and sober, and then remain that way so they can raise the twins properly.
Although alcohol and drug addiction are both viewed as diseases or illnesses, most people feel that Charlie and Brooke are addressing their addiction issues in proper fashion. It is also the hope of many people that Charlie and Brooke have finally hit their "bottom" and have made their children and cleaning up their acts the primary priority.
