Dubai Creek: A Hot Spot For Bird-watchers

At the inland end of the sweet water creek in Dubai is a large, shallow lagoon, now a wildlife sanctuary which has become a zoar for migrating shore birds. Because of the spread of irrigation and greenery the number and variety of birds in this area are growing. Approximately 27,000 birds have been counted here at one time during the autumn migration. People mostly travel to this sanctuary in the afternoons by way of a dhow cruise or an abra, as spending some time at the coasts and lagoons is worthwhile and highly enjoyable.


During the winter months pretty pink flamingos flock to the inland end of the Dubai Creek. The Arabian Gulf, its shallow saline lagoons and extensive mudflats serve as esteem winter feeding grounds for millions of Arctic and central Asian migrant shorebirds. Artificial nests have been specially built to encourage flamingos to breed at the Dubai Wildlife & Water-bird Sanctuary also known as Al-Khor Nature Reserve.

This sanctuary has platforms that allow visitors to get a close-up view of about 12,000 much sought-after vibrant species of birds like the broad-billed sandpiper and lesser sand plover (with fantastically sharp binoculars) without disturbing them.

Dubai has emerged as a Birdwatcher’s Paradise. Tourists on a sightseeing tour can stop by any spot while cruising on a dhow along the banks of the creek, to enjoy bird watching, or even the different cuisines of the world in Dubai.
