Dublin Christmas Events - The Tree Lighting Festival

Make sure to get there as early as you can, wrap up warm and enjoy the magical Christmas atmosphere. Dublin really lights up for the occasion and it's one of the city's landmark events in the run up to Christmas and this year's chosen tree really is something special. So come along and check it out!

A free festival, with great entertainment, music and dance for all of the family, the Dublin Christmas Tree Lighting Festival will take place on Sunday November 9th 2008. It's an annual event, and will mark the official launch of the Christmas season in Dublin city.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Eibhlin Byrne of Fianna Fail, will switch on the lights on O'Connell Street at around 6pm. Last year's Christmas Tree was a 60 year old Norway Spruce, standing over 18 metres tall! This year a 60ft French designed Christams tree will light Dublin's skyline. It weighs 5 tonnes and has no less that 100,000 bulbs of different sizes.

Switching on Dublin’s Christmas lights has been an integral and traditional part of Christmas in Dublin city centre for many years. It will start at around 4pm and will culminate with the lighting of the Christmas tree by Dublin's Lord Mayor at 6pm. It's a day out not to be missed with plenty of entertainment for all the family, live music, carol singing, dance and much more.

Dublin has a unique and special atmosphere all year round, but it really comes into it's own for Christmas and is a fantastic destination for Christmas shopping.
