Duck Hunter Success

There are many duck hunters who consider duck hunting to be the hunting sport, and there are a lot more tricks to the sport than you might imagine. Just the fact that many duck hunters use duck blinds just so they can stand a chance of actually catching a duck speaks volumes.

Of course, the type of blind duck hunters use depends on the type of land. If it is very marshy, then duck hunters like to use a coffin blind, which is very aptly named, as it is a coffin shaped box which the duck hunter lies in waiting for the perfect shot. It enables the hunter to move a little without the movement being seen by the ducks and scaring them away, and the hunter stays dry at the same time. But not everyone likes the idea of lying in wait inside a coffin shaped box!

For some marshes, it is possible to use a boat, and in this case hunters use a blind that fits onto the boat or canoe. This enables them to position themselves better some times than in the coffin blind, which does need to sit on fairly firm ground, not float around in the water. The boat then enables you to drift with the current, or move further into the body of water, and turn so that the boat is facing the direction the ducks will come from, this being worked out beforehand.

Of course different duck hunters like to use different equipment, and they often get very emotional about their equipment. Of course, duck hunting success doesn't just depend on the equipment, it also depends on your skills as a hunter. Knowing where the ducks are likely to hang out before arriving where you are waiting, needs skill and knowledge that many hunters do not have. You have to know which direction the ducks are likely to fly in from so that you can be waiting in the right position, facing the right direction, and that too takes knowledge of ducks and their habits.

If you love duck hunting, then you know how challenging it can be even for an experienced duck hunter. Ducks are far more intelligent than many people realize, and if something doesn't look right, they will not land, hence the reason so many duck hunters use blinds to help them blend in with their surroundings. There is the need for quietness, except for the use of duck calls which imitate the sounds that ducks are expecting to hear in an area they are considering landing on. Duck hunters also use decoy ducks to attract other ducks to the area, and in recent years these decoys have become even more realistic, but scattering decoys on a piece of water will not necessarily attract the ducks. They have to be placed, facing in the correct direction otherwise the real ducks will not land.

Yes, a duck hunter has to have skill, but the sport is a challenging one, you, the duck hunter against the ducks - what a contest!
