However dreaming of your own business and actually working towards setting up a business are two different things. For starters, a lot of planning and information is required to get into this business. You should be clear on what event planning is all about, skills required, your market and pricing structure. The following should give you a fair idea as to what is required to succeed in this business – Skills and Experience required · Verbal and written communication is vital in this business. You will be required to interact with your clients and customers, suppliers, your work force (if you have any) as well as a whole section of people that you will come into contact with while organizing and planning your event. · Organization and time management skills are inherent to this job; an event planner is required to take juggle between the minutest of detail to the bigger aspects of an event. If you are not organized, detailed and time conscious, surviving in this business let alone succeeding can be next to impossible. · Negotiation and budget management are what you will be doing at every stage. Your client has a fixed budget, and whatever you do has to be done within that budget. Negotiating with suppliers and other providers for an event can be taxing if you don’t know how. · Creativity to come up with ideas and themes for your events can be the reason why people will want to hire you. It requires a lot of planning and attention to detail. So your first step naturally should be at planning and creating a business plan for your business. The best way to go forward is to first identify your strengths and build your event planning business based on what you are good at. So for example if your expertise lies in organizing weddings, then go with that. Don’t make the mistake of taking on corporate clients or organizing other galas etc. Of course once you are set in your business, and are absolutely confident about working on all kinds of events, there is nothing to stop you. Develop Your Network of Suppliers and Staffing Resources. As an event planner you will need a team of people that you can delegate tasks too. You cannot take care of every little detail on your own. So begin with hiring maybe one or two people, develop a good working relationship with them. Hire people as and when you require them instead of hiring people blindly. Also, you will need to develop a dependable source of supplier’s right from caterers, florists and photographers.
