Eat And Stay Healthy: Finding A Way Of Eating That Actively Promotes Health
We need to eat to stay healthy, but we have to eat the right things. How, though, do we define health? Is it a mere absence of disease? Can we dissociate a healthy body from a healthy mind, or even from social health? Probably not! The reality is that they go hand in glove and are achieved through appropriate eating, regular exercise and having time for fun and relaxation. Given that is the case, we should feel some concern for modern-day society where all too many people are leading sedentary lifestyles and eating, to a large extent, dead food - food that is easily bought, easily prepared, and is processed beyond belief, with additives that both stimulate and addict. There is no doubt that eating this way is directly attributable to the growing incidences of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and countless other degenerative diseases. To some extent, too many of us have lost touch with our inner beings, with nature, and with our souls. Living in a society where people are pressured to live up to a certain standard, to be seen to have the trappings of success, and be able to demonstrate that wealth through expensive holidays and overseas travel, the heat is on and the pressure builds. Unfortunately, many people are succumbing to that pressure. And yet, if we think about it logically, what is the point of having all of this outward manifestation of success if we sacrifice our health in the pursuit it? So finding a way of eating that actively promotes health, making time for regular physical exercise and for relaxation would seem to be the prudent path to follow. Go Alkaline! For a diet to be health-promoting, we must concentrate on eating foods that are alkaline-forming. Our bodies should be in a slightly alkaline state, and to that end, our intake of acid-creating foods should be around 30%. The remainder of food should be alkaline-forming. This is what keeps us healthy and disease-free. Acidosis! Being overly-acidic is the chief culprit in essential mineral loss, as the body struggles to restore balance. The immune system weakens and disease has an easy entry into our system. The reality is that the body strives daily to be in pH balance, and if the body is acidic through inappropriate diet, it will start to rob from other body parts in order to maintain the balance - hence the number of people suffering ailments like osteoporosis and dental caries – each being a sign of acidosis. Lack of standards in a standard diet! In the developed world, sad to say, the standard diet enjoyed by many is one that is high in fructose, white breads, animal-based and overly-processed foods, so leading to the array of chronic diseases that plague us. But there is a remedy for those who want to enjoy optimal health. I'm sure you have all heard the term, 'fresh is best', but these days, perhaps it would be better to say, fresh, organic, unprocessed is best. A diet comprising around 70% alkaline foods and 30% acid-forming, will serve to balance your pH and provide you with that joie de vivre that so many of us have forgotten the feeling of. Whilst it's easy to understand the principles of an alkaline diet, changing to it and sticking with it, can be more of a challenge because it demands that we make a 180 degree turnaround in our thinking. It also demands that we prepare ahead, and it challenges us to say no to convenient, heavily-processed, dead food. Taking control! It would be wonderful if, in making the switch, we could establish overnight, a garden where we could 'shop' for our daily food needs. Not only would we save a fortune, but we'd also have a darned good idea as to what was in the food that we would be eating. Given that organic fruits and vegetables (especially green, leafy vegetables) are the basis of an alkaline diet, planning to have a garden is a wise move. But given that such things don't happen overnight, here are some ideas to start you on your journey of wellness. Eat lots of raw vegetables and fruit, organic if possible. Your body will be enzyme-rich and your energy levels will rise overnight! Develop a taste for green smoothies – breakfast in a glass! Start with fruit-based drinks and add greens as your palate adjusts. Drink lots of alkaline water with lemon juice squeezed into it. In fact, ditch coffee and tea and enjoy the freshness of pure water. Use organic coconut oil. This is a wonder-oil which can be used for healthy chocolate making, for ingesting (for weight loss!), and simply to promote health. Cut out processed food completely. These are dead. Your body will respond lovingly. Learn to love, to prepare, and show off, raw foods. For the mind! Try yoga – wonderful for both mind and physical fitness. Walk in the sun and enjoy optimal levels of vitamin D. Relish the new-found happiness that you will surely enjoy. It won't be long before your friends will be begging for your secret!
