Ecological Gardening
If, over the years, your plants start to grow in places where you don’t want them to grow let yourself be surprised by combinations of plants that occur spontaneously. Grab only if greatly expanding species of plants are threatening the desired ones. Weed by hand and the soil remains undisturbed as much as possible. With hoeing and raking the soil you will activate weed seeds and you will disturb the soil more than necessary. Keep the soil covered as much as possible. Thus, giving the weeds less chance and the soil dries out more slowly. Save yourself the hassle of winterizing. Plants and soil have more protection from frost when you let the wilted stalks on the plants. Moreover, insects will find some good spots and winter birds occasionally some seed. In spring you can cut the dead flower stalks and shred them in the garden. Preferably use organic material as fertilizer or soil conditioners.
