Education Key To Atv Safety

A recent story coming out of Australia points to a belief by ATV owners that adding a roll-over protection system (ROPS) will make it impossible to roll their vehicle. Manufacturers think that this may lead to reckless operation of ATVs and want to debunk the myth before it takes widespread hold of riders minds. ATV roll-overs are a leading cause of injury and death for ATV operators.

Rhys Griffiths, motorcycle manager for the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), an Australian advocacy group, stresses that improving ATV safety should focus on proper operator education. ''Scientific research has demonstrated that the nature of ATVs is such that adding a ROPS would increase the likelihood of deaths and serious injuries when rollover incidents occur. The key to improving rider safety begins with proper education and training – particularly important in regional and rural areas which are the primary market for ATVs,'' he said.

Why is a story based in Australia of interest here in North America? No matter where you are living and using an ATV, education is the key to safety. Every ATV rider, no matter their age, needs to take a rider safety course and wear a helmet when riding. The Australians may have published the story, but it is relevant worldwide.
