There is a Supreme Court case going on right now. The Westboro Baptist Church is associated with it. The right to rally at funerals could possibly be changed. The church might not be allowed to any longer. Albert Snyder, father of fallen Marine Corporal Matt Snyder, sued Westboro for defamation and invasion of privacy. Snyder initially won the suit, but it had been overturned by the Court of Appeals. The case had been appealed to the Supreme Court, and oral arguments were heard various months ago. There still has to be a decision made. Snyder v. Phelps could go either way.
It isn't required to be nice under the First Amendment
Considering how the church acts, it is entirely inappropriate that they protest at funerals, even still. Because of the First Amendment's way of guarding religious freedom, all of the hate speech that the Westboro Baptists is legal.
