Effective Public Speaking: Handling Questions

One of the most difficult parts of delivering a speech is the question and answer session afterwards. The uncertainty of the questions that might be asked can be unnerving. t's especially important to convey a confident appearance and to maintain control during this time.

The key is good preparation. As you prepare your speech, try to look at it from various different angles and perspectives in order to identity any gaps or potential questions members your audience might ask. You can also try rehearsing your presentation in front of some friends (a real audience) and get them to ask as many questions as possible to help you anticipate the questions you might hear.

You need to maintain a gracious demeanor even when audience members are hostile. Good strategies may include talking to the person individually after the presentation, or redirecting the question to the general audience. If a question is irrelevant or off-topic, you need to carefully steer the question back to your speech. Never become argumentative, apologetic, or defensive. Pause and think carefully before giving a response. If a question is unclear, ask for more details.
