Effective Website Design – Make Your Website Stand Out

Let’s talk about making your website stand out in the crowd. There are three basic core elements in the design of all websites. These are:

Style
Color
Appearance

Style

Websites can either be designed in a linear approach or in an organic approach.

In a linear approach the imagery and figures are all cut in straight lines – few if any curves. Inter-dispersed on the page are lines and boxes. The imagery for this time of site is dependability, security, structure, honesty. These types of design suite a financial and business sector that wants to portray that time of image. Colors are typically traditional and conservative and banner and pictures are conservative by nature as well.

Websites can also be more organic – curves and unique shapes and cuts. These designs portray a more artistic nature – they suite the social, health and beauty professions best.

Websites with these designs use flashy colors, banners, and flash.

These are not definite rules, but as a business professional you want to focus on the type of imagery you want to project and build on it. Remember that you can choose a blend of designs as well.
Color

Colors are also an important factor with the design. There are two groups of color in design. These are warm and cool. In cool colors, you project a calm safe soothing environment. These are popular for the financial, technical and government sites.

Warm colors invigorate the body and so they are used to capture the eye. These are popular for the artistic, fun, and even the restaurant sectors.
Sizing

Nowadays, there are so many large and wide monitors that websites are built much larger and wider than the traditional 800×600. Evenso, many people are worried about using the larger space as there are many users on mobile, Ipad, Iphone and other device (plus on dialup still!) that don’t display the extra space properly. Based on your clientele and your target market you can design rationally the space you want.

Regardless of the space of the webpage, you will want to decide how to position your page – centered or left, or right. Traditionally people center the page to better use larger and wider monitors. However, you may want to deliberately use the left margin to display fast and efficient pages. Remember also to check your website on all the traditional browsers. Often there are differences across the changes to Safari, Firefox, IE (6,7,8) and Opera. Not to mention I-Phones and Mobile devices….
