Effective Website Design

There are some hallmarks of effective website design that you may not notice consciously but that you probably appreciate every time you do go to a site that was designed well. When a site is well-designed, it still embodies the spirit of the Internet as it was originally conceived, even though it may be a very modern site with very advanced features. The idea behind the Internet when it was originally built was to make the distribution of information easier and faster. A well-designed website still embodies this concept.

Design and Ease of Use

One of the ways that website design can be done to facilitate ease of use is by including intelligent navigation schemes within the site. Up until the end of the 1990s, most navigation schemes were very simple, as the sites that they provided access to were usually quite small. As the average size of websites expanded, it became necessary to conceive of new ways to provide effective and intelligent navigation schemes. Today, designing a website oftentimes means that the firm doing the work has to consolidate an enormous amount of information into the navigation menus and do it in a way that makes it easy for visitors to find their way from page to page.

One of the places where you will see some of the best examples of skilful navigation design is in ecommerce website design. These websites oftentimes have hundreds, sometimes thousands, of items for sale and that means that the navigational menus have to be intuitive for the people who come to visit. When sloppy website design is provided for these sites, it becomes nearly impossible for visitors to find their way around and, thus, it becomes nearly impossible for the site to make a sale.

When you're looking at a firm to handle your site, make sure that they put a lot of time and effort into developing your navigation scheme. Particularly if you have a very complex site, you need to make certain that they have handled those sorts of jobs before and that they understand how to make a logical and intelligent set of menus that will allow people to find what they are looking for easily and to have an enjoyable experience at the site. Poor navigation can make a site look unprofessional and can discourage people from spending any time at the site at all, much less spending their money at the site.
