Effectively Training Shih Tzu Puppies

Shih tzu dogs are a wonderful breed. They are small yet confident and loyal. With the proper training, these puppies can develop into loving and obedient dogs. It will take some time and patience. Generally speaking, most dogs are not fully trained until after they are a year old. There are some ways to make training shih tzu puppies easier and less stressful on you and them.

Until your puppy has been fully trained, crate training is highly recommended by veterinarians and dog trainers alike. It may seem cruel to put your adorable, wide-eyed shih tzu inside a crate, especially when they cry or whine. However, there is nothing at all mean or inhumane about crate training. In fact, using a crate will keep your dog safe while you are at work or asleep at night. It also greatly helps with housebreaking. A crate will turn into a safe place for the dog. Make it comfortable by placing blankets, toys, water, and treats in the crate. This simulates a den, and it gives the dog a safe place to seek refuge.

Housebreaking is one of the first things you want to start working on. Since a shih tzu is small, you can choose to have them relieve themselves inside the home. This can be done by creating a potty area with a "patch of grass," which is artificial grass on top of a litter tray. You can also use puppy pads and a large litter box. The other option is to take them outside. It is best to choose one or the other, since puppies can get confused if you try to implement both.

Training shih tzu puppies to be safe is what you need to work on once they are having moderate success with housebreaking. The two most important commands are to "come" and "stay." These keep your dog safe by teaching them to come to you, or to stay put. Should they get off their leash, run unexpectedly outside, or get too far away at the dog park, these commands will come in handy. Treats can be used as rewards for ideal behavior. Make sure they are special treats that your dog is not used to receiving.

It is also important to take your shih tzu puppy out for daily walks. Even though this is a small dog, they still need a daily walk. Encourage them to walk along side of you. This asserts your position of pack leader. It also prevents them from darting out and possibly tripping you.

Training shih tzu puppies will take time and patience. These lovable little dogs make excellent companions. Put in the time and effort into training now so you can have a balanced and healthy dog in the future.
