Employee Mediation And Why You Need It

A common goal of all business owners is high productivity. Therefore, anything that gets in the way of a high productivity level needs to be dealt with quickly and efficiently. One problem that affects employee’s productivity and is fairly easy to deal with is tension between employees.

Everyone has problems with other people at some time or another, whether it’s a personality clash or an actual disagreement. Both can cause serious tension at work, and can lead to more absenteeism, higher levels of dissatisfaction among employees and lower productivity levels. What can employers do to deal with situations such as these?

A lot of companies already offer a variety of services through an Employee Assistance Program (EAP for short). Services included in these types of programs can range from financial counseling to legal consultations. The theory is that everyone has a personal life, and there’s a wide spectrum of problems in one’s personal life that can affect one’s performance at work. Offering services that can help resolve these types of problems can go a long way to ensuring a good reputation as an employer and consistently high productivity rates.

To deal with arguments, disagreements and personality clashes among employees, employee mediation is an important part of such a program. To be effective, the mediator must be an objective third party without any ties to any person involved in the dispute or the company. Too many business owners believe that the Human Resources department is objective enough to deal with any and all issues that arise between employees. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case.

As an example, let’s say an employee (let’s name him Joe) has a problem with his supervisor. Joe doesn’t want to go to Human Resources because he feels that they will be biased in favor of his supervisor. This company doesn’t offer employee mediation services, so Joe merely begins looking for a new job elsewhere.

This is an outcome that nobody wants. Businesses want their employees to be happy, therefore having an objective and neutral third party to settle employee disputes is a must. This can be easily accomplished by hiring a third party employee mediation organization.

High productivity levels are a goal of all business owners. Since employee disputes can interfere with productivity levels, it’s important to provide employee mediation services to resolve them quickly and efficiently. Hiring a neutral third party organization will give employees the security they need when resolving workplace conflicts.
