Engineering Jobs

The duties and responsibilities of an automotive engineer include designing trucks, cars and other types of vehicles. An automotive engineer can work in one of three different specialized areas. These areas include product engineering, development engineering, and manufacturing engineering.
The engineer that is responsible for designing and testing engines is the product engineer. The duties and responsibilities of the development engineer are to set the specifications for the individual parts and coordinate the overall design. The manufacturing engineer is normally responsible for the entire manufacturing process including the final assembly.

To pursue an exciting career as an automotive engineer, the student can follow one of two paths. These paths include mechanical engineering and automotive engineering technology. While the basic requirements of the paths are alike, there are differences between the two. Preparation for this career can start as early as high school. The high school curriculum should include mathematics, chemistry, and physics. This field also requires extensive experience in computers, which means courses information technology and computer sciences will also apply.

If the student prefers a career in automotive engineering, they will need to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree from the area of automotive engineering technology. This degree will prepare the student for a production engineering position. Some companies provide internships that are designed to prepare the student for professional job positions after they graduate.

People who want to pursue a career in mechanical engineering will have to obtain to a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from a college or a university. This degree will help to prepare the student to work in manufacturing and automotive designs. Students that prepare to work in this field will also continue their studies by attending graduate school. A master’s degree is normally required for those that will work in the mechanical engineering area.

These types of positions also require special certifications. To secure the certifications that are required for the automotive engineer and mechanic engineer positions, the student will be required to take an exam, which is given by the Society of Automotive Engineers or the Society of Mechanical Engineers. The automotive engineer and the mechanical engineers are also required to use CAD, which is Computer Assisted Design. The people who work in these positions are hired to make sure that the cars that everyone drives are safe and reliable. It is also their job to test the engine, transmission and other parts for their performance and reliability.
