Have you ever attended a horse racing meeting? If you have answered in the negative you could be missing out on what I believe is a great day out. I have enjoyed the thrill of going to the races for the last twenty years, it is not all about the gambling, it is more about the atmosphere, seeing the skill of the jockeys and the sheer power of the horses.
I live in England and am fortunate to be only a short distance away from some great horse racing venues. Cheltenham is the closest and the Cheltenham festival is one not to be missed for any horse racing enthuisiast. The Irish come over in their thousands after seemingly saving up all year for their weekly jolly. Despite the many pints of Guiness which are sunk throughout the week, there is hardly any trouble as the majority of the punters are in good spirits, win or lose.
I also like to go to other racetracks such as Aintree and Ascot, however strangely enough I have to admit that a trip to Haydock Park is my favourite. I say strangely as most people would not consider Haydock to be in their top three let alone their favourite.
I like to make a weekend out of it when I go to Haydock. I will stay at the Picadilly Hotel after spending the day at the races. On the evening I will spend the evening with my friends in Yates wine bar before returning to the hotel bar. It is a long day but I always look forward to wakin up to the famous Picadilly Hotel breakfast which helps to quickly lose my hangover.
If you have never attended a race meeting, give it a go, I am confident that you will love it.
