Enjoy Horseback Riding In The Foothills Of North Georgia

The foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains north of Atlanta offer some spectacular scenery. The area’s gently rolling hills and lovely lakes provide many opportunities to enjoy nature. A horseback ride is a peaceful way to get out and enjoy the surroundings. Several stables within a short drive of Atlanta offer trail rides to the public.

Georgia Frontiers Western Pleasure Trail Riding welcomes families and caters to riders of all levels of experience. Detailed riding instructions are given prior to each ride. Riders must be age 7 or older. Their property has shady wooded trails. One hour rides are $35 per rider. Two hour rides are $65. Their most popular ride is the Full Moon Trail Ride for riders age 21 and older. The moonlight ride with barbecue buffet dinner and marshmellow roast is $75. Full Moon Rides are scheduled for July 16, August 13, and September 10. The stable is located at 545 Ruff White Road off Highway 20 in Canton, Georgia, approximately 45 minutes north of Atlanta. They recommend riders wear jeans or long pants, and closed toed shoes are required. All riders ages 7-15 must wear helmets. Reservations are required.

Lake Lanier Islands Equestrian Center is located within the Lake Lanier Islands Resort, at 7000 Lanier Islands Parkway in Buford, Georgia. The resort is about a 45 minute drive northeast of Atlanta. Their gentle horses take riders on 45 minute rides along scenic trails on the shore of the lake. Trail riders must be 7 years old and 48 inches tall. Trail rides leave every hour on the hour. Pony rides are available for children ages 2 and older weighing less than 80 lbs. The prices are $35 for trail rides and $15 for pony rides. There is also a Ride and Romance Package which includes a 45 minute private trail ride and a secluded picnic lunch by the lake. The stable is open daily from April-October from 10am-5pm. November-March the stable is open daily from 11am-4pm. Reservations are highly recommended.

Sunny Farms North is one hour north of Atlanta on Long Branch Road in Dahlonega, Georgia. The facility has over 250 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and there are pasture and mountain trails. They cater to all riding levels. Riders may explore the trails on their own or pay an additional fee for a guided ride. The cost is $30 per hour or $35 per hour for doubles (adult and child). The stables are open all year. Reservations are recommended.

Barnsley Gardens Resort is an hour northwest of Atlanta, at 597 Barnsley Gardens Road in Adairsville, Georgia. Riders ages 11 and older can take a one hour trail ride for $75 or a two hour wilderness ride for $115. Children ages 7-10 may take a 30 minute corral ride for $45.

A horseback ride is a great way to explore one of Georgia’s most scenic areas. These stables all take care to ensure that their guests have a pleasurable ride.
