Enjoy Live Theater In Newberry, South Carolina

Audiences in Newberry, South Carolina can enjoy live theater throughout the year. The Newberry Community Players have been entertaining audiences for more than four decades. Each year the theater group presents at least five plays, usually including a musical and a children’s production.

The non-profit community theater group, comprised of all volunteers, was founded in 1970. Their permanent home is the renovated Ritz Theater, located at 1511 Main Street in downtown Newberry. The historic Art Deco style building was a former movie theater. It was built in 1936 with a fireproof interior auditorium seating 800 patrons. It was the first theater south of Washington to have “microphonic sound,” a state of the art feature at the time.

The Newberry Community Players are ready to kick off the New Year with a murder mystery night in January. Surreal Housewives of Newberry County is a production written by the theater group featuring some of Newberry’s local “housewives.” This special dinner theater presentation is scheduled for January 20 and 21 at 6:30pm. The venue will be The Flying Pie, an Italian restaurant across the street from the Ritz Theater at 1506 Main Street. Tickets for the production will be $25 and include dinner. A cash bar will be available.

The group’s March production will be Dearly Departed, a comedy which features a dysfunctional Southern family. Chaos ensues when the family patriarch dies in the opening scene, and the colorful members of his family deal with the burial plans. Dearly Departed will also be a dinner theater production, and audiences will be able to sample fare from another popular Newberry venue. The play is scheduled for March 23, 24, 30, and 31 at the Country Club of Newberry, located at 414 Country Club Road. Curtain time is 6:30pm. Tickets are $40 and include dinner. A cash bar will be available at the club.

In April the Newberry Community Players will present the classic C.S. Lewis tale, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. This is the popular story of four children and their travels to the land of Narnia. This play is a production of the Newberry Community Players’ Imagination Alley Children’s Theater and is suitable for family audiences. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe will run on April 20 and 21 at 7pm, with a matinee performance on Sunday, April 22 at 3pm. The play will be performed at the Prosperity Civic Center, located at 250 School Drive in the nearby town of Prosperity. Tickets will be $8.

Tickets for all plays may be purchased online at www.theritzonline.com or from the Newberry Opera House box office, located at 1201 McKibben Street in downtown Newberry. Join Newberry theater patrons as they enjoy these upcoming productions.
