Enjoy Live Theater In Spartanburg

Actors from the Spartanburg Little Theatre have been entertaining audiences in town since 1946. Audiences usually enjoy five major productions each year ranging from comedy to drama to musicals. The theater group is a largely volunteer organization, with some professional directors and guest musicians.

There are three remaining productions rounding out the 2011-12 theater season. Honky Tonk Angels will run January 13-15 and January 20-22, 2012. This musical production follows three women who are dissatisfied with their lives and set out to realize their dreams of becoming country music stars. Honky Tonk Angels was written by the same author as one of last season’s popular shows, Always…Patsy Cline. The production includes well known country classics such as Coal Miner’s Daughter, Stand by Your Man, Nine to Five, and Harper Valley PTA. Friday and Saturday evening shows begin at 8pm, and the Sunday matinees start at 3pm. Tickets for all shows are $25.

The Tony Award winning musical, Titanic: The New Musical, will follow in March. The story is based on the factual accounts of the Titanic and what happened to the ship, her crew, and the passengers on her fateful maiden voyage across the Atlantic. Dates for the show are March 9-11 and March 16-18, 2012. The production includes a large local cast and is presented in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking. Friday and Saturday performances are scheduled for 8pm, and the Sunday shows will start at 3pm. Tickets are $25.

On Golden Pond is the story of an older couple who are spending the summer at their cottage on Golden Pond. They must deal with a complicated relationship with their estranged daughter and her teenage son. The play is a lesson in love, family, and forgiveness. On Golden Pond is scheduled for May 4-6 and May 11-13, 2012. Friday and Saturday shows will start at 8pm, and the Sunday shows will begin at 3pm. Tickets for this production are $25.

Spartanburg Little Theatre sponsors the Spartanburg Youth Theatre, the second oldest youth theater in South Carolina. There are two remaining Youth Theatre productions this season. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie is scheduled for February 10-11, 2012. This play is based on the popular children’s book by Laura Numeroff. Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp will be presented April 20-21, 2012. The story chronicles the adventures of a young lad who finds a magic lamp and dares to wish for great things.

Youth Theatre productions are scheduled for Fridays at 4:30pm and 7pm and at 2pm on Saturdays. Tickets are $12. Spartanburg Little Theatre also sponsors Imagine That, an improvisational theater group that performs throughout the State. Their productions cover social topics such as racism, drug abuse, and teen pregnancy.

The Spartanburg Little Theatre and Spartanburg Youth Theatre performances take place at the Chapman Cultural Center, located at 200 E. St. John Street in downtown Spartanburg. The David Reid Theatre is in the center of the complex.
