Enjoy Newberry, South Carolina This Summer
Many visitors start out exploring Newberry’s historic downtown district. The Newberry Opera House and the Newberry County Court House are two of the most recognizable buildings in town. Visitors may enjoy browsing in some of downtown’s fine shops or eating in one of the excellent restaurants. Shoppers may select locally grown produce in downtown Newberry’s Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. Wells Japanese Garden is an unusual little park located behind City Hall. Visitors will find a Torri Gate, a Temple, a Moon Bridge, and a Tea House. A drive through Newberry’s residential streets will reveal many of the town’s elegant historic homes. After spending some time downtown, visitors may be ready to try some activities just outside the city limits. Carter and Holmes Orchids is located three miles south of Newberry at 629 Mendenhall Road. The company has been growing orchids for over 65 years. Their 18 greenhouses are open to the public Monday-Saturday from 9am-5pm. Customers may choose from among their many lovely varieties of orchids available for purchase and receive advice on caring for their selection. Enoree River Vineyard, a local winery, is located at 1650 Dusty Road. Visitors are welcome to tour the grounds, enjoy a wine tasting, and purchase some of their fine wines. The winery is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-6pm. Visitors who are eager to enjoy some outside activities may want to stop at nearby Dreher Island State Recreation Area on Lake Murray, one of South Carolina’s most popular lakes. The park is a great place for a picnic or a short hike. Little Gap Trail offers hikers stunning views of the lake. Those who have bikes may ride some of the park’s bike paths, or bring your fishing gear for an afternoon of fishing on the lake. The park is open daily from dawn to dusk. Admission is $2 for adults. Children under the age of 15 are admitted free. More serious hikers may want to hike a three mile section of South Carolina’s Palmetto Trail that runs through Lynch’s Woods Park. The trail runs through a lovely area of upland forest. Other spur trails in the park are open for mountain bikers and equestrians. Newberry is located off Interstate 26 in central South Carolina, about midway between Columbia and Greenville. The Newberry area offers many interesting things to do this summer.
