Enjoy Trails In Atlanta’s Smyrna-vinings Area
The Chattahoochee National Recreation Area is a series of linear parks along the Chattahoochee River on the north side of the city. The Palisades Unit has four access points near the Vinings area. The Akers Drive entrance is located off Powers Ferry Road. The Paces Mill entrance is off Cobb Parkway. There are also entrances off Indian Trail and Whitewater Creek Road. The Palisades Unit contains three different shoals: Long Island Shoals, Thornton Shoals, and Devils Race Course Shoals. Several miles of trails wind through wooded areas and along the river, giving scenic views of the shoals. Hikers may see a variety of birds in the area. Shallow areas of the river provide places to wade and fish. The park also has picnic areas. There is a $3 daily fee per vehicle to park. The Palisades Unit is open daily during daylight hours. Heritage Park is a 105-acre nature preserve near Smyrna. The park has a 1.7 mile soft surface walking trail that passes through woods along Nickajack Creek, with a boardwalk over the wetlands. Points of interest along the trail include the historic Concord Covered Bridge and the ruins of the Concord Woolen Mills. The woolen mill was built in 1847 and made Confederate uniforms during the Civil War. It was burned by General Sherman’s troops on July 4, 1864. After the war the mill was rebuilt and operated until 1889, when it was again destroyed by fire. The mill was rebuilt another time but abandoned after 1916. A side trail leads to nearby Concord Covered Bridge, the oldest remaining covered bridge in public use in the Atlanta area. The bridge was burned during the Civil War but rebuilt in 1872. Heritage Park is located at the intersection of Fontaine and Nickajack Roads. It is open year round during daylight hours. A spur trail from Heritage Park connects to the Silver Comet Trail, a paved multiuse trail. The Silver Comet Trail follows an abandoned rail line and is open to hikers, bikers, skaters, and horses. No motorized vehicles are allowed. The trail begins in Smyrna and runs 61 miles west to the Alabama border. The first few miles are the busiest portion of trail, and there are a number of different access points providing parking, restrooms, and water. These trails are all good options for people looking for exercise and recreation. They offer the perfect escape from city noise and traffic. Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com J.
