Enjoy A Tremendous Holiday At Sherkston Shores - Part 3
Old Fort Erie, just a few miles from Sherskton was a major fortress during the War of 1812. Today, Old Fort Erie stands as a living reminder of the over 3,000 troops killed or wounded in the English siege of the fort in August and September, 1814. The Battle at Fort Erie was a key to the survival of the infant United States. Stop and check out the monuments and buildings that stand in its honor. Fort Erie is open every day from 10:00 to 5:00 beginning early in May and continuing through early October. It will cost you $9.25 Canadian to get in. If you're lucky enough to be at Sherkston on August 8th and 9th, make sure you be a part of Old Fort Erie's annual Siege Weekend. Here you can see actors re-create the battles that took place in that deadly month in 1814. Have you ever wondered how Great Lakes shipping traffic makes it from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie and back? Since we know the that ships can't go over Niagara Falls, there has to be alternate way. The Welland Canal begins in Lake Erie at the City of Port Colborne and travels 27 miles to Lake Ontario at Port Weller. There is a series of eight locks along the way that raise or lower the vessels by over 300 feet. It takes about 15 minutes to drive from Sherkston Shores to Port Colborne so you can take your picnic basket and enjoy your supper in the beautiful park by lock number 8. With any luck, you'll see a massive cargo vessel passing through the lock. In fact, on a clear day, you can watch a ship arrive at Port Colborne from the beach at Sherkston Shores and have plenty of time to jump in the car, drive to Port Colborne and see the same ship pass through the lock. I've watched lots of ships make this trip and I never get sick of it. Check out the two cool drawbriges that go up and down as the ships pass through Port Colborne. Port Colborne has many stores and restaurants so you can replenish your supplies and have some dinner while you're there. Do you like auto racing? If you are, you will want to get to Humberstone Speedway in nearby Gasport. This 3/8 mile dirt oval runs each Sunday evening from May through September. The headline division is the Sportsman Modifieds and the faster 358 Small Block Modifieds run a couple times a month. Make sure you get there before practice and watch the street stocks slide around all over the place as they work in the track for racing. Humberstone is the only place I've ever seen this very funny ritual. Humberstone Speedway is only about 15 minutes from Sherkston Shores so be sure to check it out. In article four, we're going to visit Niagara-on-the-Lake. Once you know about it, you'll want to spend a morning or an afternoon there. Have I told you yet that Sherkston Shores is only 30 minutes from Niagara Falls? I've hung out at the Falls over 40 times and I know all the sights you're going to want to see. After two articles about Niagara-on-the-Lake, and continuing until I finish, I'm going to tell you about the best ways to spend your time in Niagara Falls.
