Enjoying Movies At Home With A Home Theater

Ever since I can remember I have been a fan of movies and the escapism offered by them. I have particularly enjoyed seeing movies at my local movie theater as they have always offered superior sound and vision to anything else on offer. I can remember hearing the roar of Tie-Fighters in Star Wars and seeing the forbidding monolith in 2001. However in recent times I have found my experiences at the theater ruined by a variety of things. First off, the price of admission has shot up considerably in recent years, to the point where I seriously need to consider its value. Secondly, and most importantly for me, theaters are no longer the refuge for people with the same passion in movies, but are attended by anyone. This includes annoying teenage kids who talk through the movie, throw popcorn and generally ruin the experience for everyone else. To this end, my movie viewing has been done in my own home through a home theater with receiver for the past few years and it has been a revelation. Admittedly I no longer get to see films as soon as they are released, but I can now enjoy them on crystal clear HD and booming surround sound. All of this within the comfort of my own chair and somewhere with complete silence.

The main staple of my home system is the receiver, which handles the video and audio signals and relays them as necessary. This is an extremely important bit of kit as it provides a central place for handling all signals in the process and allows you to easily switch between video and audio sources. However it is also a bottleneck and any output will only be as good as the receiver. This is extremely important when you are using on of the receivers functions, such as video processing. Video processing allows you to take on video signal and output is as another, and some new receivers allow manipulation of the input signal to output a better signal. This is generally referred to as upscaling and allows you to play DVD's in HD for example. I would recommend that whatever you do, you ensure that you test this piece of kit fully before commiting to but. It should also take the lions share of your budget as it the most important part.

Another benefit of a home theater with receiver is the ability to output audio in many formats. Currently I run my movies out through Dolby Surround 7.1, which incorporates 7 distinct audio channels along with a dedicated bass channel handled by a subwoofer. This format is the pinnacle and really comes into its own through action movies. Obviously the source audio needs to be compatible with this for it to work, but this is the standard nowadays, certainly on any blu-ray discs.

Lastly, and this may be slightly different to most reviews, but I want to talk about my chair. It is no good having the most amazing home theater with receiver, your own dedicated room and a completely free weekend if you are only able to sit in a little stool to enjoy it all by. My chair is a Premiere Home Cinema Chair that includes a fully reclining seat, in arm refrigerator and a heating system. This may seem a little extravagant but I cant tell you the bonus it is to sit in a chair like this and enjoy your films. So that said, include a little bit in your home theater budget for purchasing some appropriate seating.
