Essential Facts About Binaural Beats

Binaural beats activate certain parts of the brain because of particular audio frequencies they transmit. This particular audio then manipulates brainwaves to alpha, beta, delta and theta frequencies, which effect the functioning of the brain. Each brainwave corresponds to a particular brain activity and human consciousness with each beat activating certain brainwaves. They are created using computer programs, which are designed to record and produce these special beats. Some of their foremost uses are for meditation, learning and sleeping.

Their Effect on the Mind

Each beat is designed for creating a particular type of brainwave and hence each beat has a direct corresponding effect on the mind and its functioning. If these beats are used appropriately for the purposes that they are composed for then their effects are positive. However, if they are used for something completely different - for example, in stimulation of beta state, that is, alertness and awakening is used while sleeping - then it would leave the person anxious and unable to sleep. According to a number of sources, these beats are very safe and advantageous if they are used as per the recommendation at the correct place and time. However, if they are used in different settings, then these beats could have adverse impacts on the mind, as the brain will receive contradictory signals.

When is it Advised Against?

The adverse impact of binaural beats is observed when the person begins using them during situations when they are not to be used. Therefore, if a person who is driving a car begins to listen to delta beats, which are used to stimulate sleep, then it could lead to disastrous result. Driving a car requires focus and alertness of mind whereas delta beats are used for putting the mind to sleep.

Long Term and Immediate Effects

The effects of the beats usually end after an hour, though the feeling or particular state of mind might continue to be felt longer. Many people use them for various activities. Their use is common and completely harmless. Danger arises when a person begins to listen to them for 24 hours. Even after he adjusts the settings to match the situation or his surroundings, it would be harmful as it prevents the normal functioning of the brain.

Psychological or Mental Disorders

One of the prime concerns while using the beats is the chances of psychological issues developing with the user. The effect of beats varies from person to person and the experience is very much individual. No two persons have the same experience even if they listen to the same beat at the same place. Those suffering from existing mental disorders or past issues must consult their clinical psychologist or regular therapist before making use of the beats. They may cause problems to the person and his health even though they would be perfectly harmless to a normal person. Persons suffering from seizures and schizophrenia must not listen to them and are strongly discouraged.

Scientific Research and Studies

Binaural beats have been the subject of numerous studies over the years and scientists have used electroencephalography, or EEG machines, to learn the specific effects on brainwaves. Gerald Oster's seminal 1973 article in Scientific America has confirmed the effects of the beats.
