The loss of a dog can be like the loss of a family member. If you were very close to your dog, then after a loss, you are naturally going to feel helpless, sad, and alone. Many people have difficulty accepting the loss of a dog, especially if they had to put their dog to sleep. Euthanasia is one of the most humane ways that you can end your dog’s life, and you can be there with them if you choose up until the last second. Choosing to put your dog to sleep is not cruel or heartless, sometimes it is necessary because they are in pain or they have an incurable illness.

Your veterinarian should be able to give you a clear indication of when the best time might be, but remember that you know your pet best. You see them everyday, and you know most about their day-to-day quality of life. It may be best to consult with your veterinarian about anything that your pet is currently experiencing so that you can choose an appropriate time.

Dealing with the Loss of a Dog -- Should You Stay or Go?

When it is time to let your pet go, you can stand by their side and watch them go peacefully. Many people find it comforting to stay with their dog up until the end because this gives them the solace of knowing that their dog did not experience pain or discomfort before death. Other people may prefer to leave their pet at the clinic or veterinarian’s office, as they feel it is just too painful to stay and watch. There is not one right way to do it; you have to choose the best option for you. It is an intensely personal decision as to whether you want to stay with your pet or leave while the euthanasia is performed.

Even if you chose to leave your pet, it may still be helpful to know that during the injection, your pet does not feel pain. They are given an overdose of anesthesia, and then they drift off to a place where there is no pain, only the unconditional love that you shared together. The loss of a dog can be extremely difficult to accept, but you will eventually be able to take comfort knowing that you did not prolong your dog’s pain.
