Exclusive Programming On Satellite Television

It’s summer in the U.S. and your best time is spent in doors—especially if you live in one of those lower 48 states with 100-degree weather! Sure, it’s fun to go swimming, camping and theme-park hopping when you’re out of school or on vacation. However, spending too much time in the sweltering sun can be dangerous. Why not relax a bit and curl up in your comfortable couch inside your air conditioned home? Luckily, satellite Internet is there to provide the entertainment. Look at some of these classic movies debuting on Pay-Per-View in July and August.

1. Friday the 13th

This is the remake of the 1980 film, which launched one of the most well-known horror franchises in American cinema. If you remember correctly, the original Friday the 13th had little to no Jason sightings; so if you came to see the blade-wielding hockey mask killer, you won’t be disappointed in the updated sequel. The writing is much better and far more tongue-in-cheek this time around, as the visual effects are also superior. If you love scares, check this film out some Friday on satellite PPV.

2. Gran Torino

This is one of Clint Eastwood’s best performances, as he plays an aging racist, possibly possessed by the spirit of old Dirty Harry. However, this film sees Eastwood’s maturation as an actor, director and social civics teacher. The film is not about racism per say, or violence, but about reconciling and apologizing for the past. Gran Torino was easily one of the best films of 2008 but was somehow snubbed at the Academy Awards. Don’t make the same mistake as the Oscar voters—watch this film! It’s an emotional rollercoaster and a thought provoking piece of filmmaking.

3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button wasn’t exactly snubbed at the Oscars (it was nominated quite a few times) but fell short when competing head to head with Slumdog Millionaire. Nevertheless, the plot of Button, based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is unique: a man ages in reverse, starting out as an “old” infant and regressing over the years into a very wise and dementia-ridden child. This is Brad Pitt at his most self-important and earnest. Not the best movie director David Fincher has ever brought us, but a truly unique film that will stick with you.

4. Australia

Director Baz Luhrmann follows up the brilliant and viscerally challenging Moulin Rouge! with Australia, a war-romance set in northern Australia before World War II. The film is written to be in the style of a grand Hollywood romance amidst terror; it’s like Gone With the Wind or Casablanca for an MTV generation. Still, Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman are arguably the two most beautiful people in the world and will take your breath away with every lovelorn glance. This film is definitely worth checking out on satellite PPV.

5. Rachel Getting Married

A quiet, intimate and very subtle film about a recovering alcoholic (played by the squeaky clean Anne Hathaway) returning home for her sister’s wedding. This got Hathaway an Oscar nomination, though the best performance in the film, as you will see by the film’s end, is by Debra Winger who gives a masterfully mature performance, so good in its blink-and-you-missed-it pathos.

There’s lots of fun to check out this summer on satellite TV!
