Exercises That Improve The Memory

Physical exercise and its overall health benefits have been touted for of years. Science has now proven that physical exercise can actually boost your memory and increase your brain size. Just as you can increase the size of specific muscles when you exercise you can enlarge and strengthen specific regions of your brain through exercise.

There are both physical and mental exercises you can perform to increase the efficiency of your memory and keep your mind in top shape. Let's take a look at a few physical exercises you can do to give your memory the boost it needs.

Moderate aerobic exercise such as walking 30 to 45 min. a day, three or more times a week will increase the blood flow to the brain, enlarging your frontal lobes and add new memory recording neurons. Any type of physical exercise that makes you breathe rapidly and increase your heart rate is the most powerful trigger for new cell growth in the brain. When you take in large amounts of oxygen, your blood flow to the brain becomes more efficient. Long distance sports, like running or swimming, force the body to take in more oxygen. When this oxygen gets to your brain, it is like increasing the power to a lightbulb. With this oxygen, your brain can function better and actually store more information.

Exercises involving balance stimulate the memory by requiring the mind to work to stabilize the body. Your brain becomes a direct path for each limb. Examples of exercises like this would include: balancing yourself on one leg while extending the opposite leg, sounds a lot simpler and it really is. Doing sit-ups using a balance ball will accomplish the same brain stimulation. Your body requires total brain function to maintain good balance.

While it may not be as much of a physical exercise as it is mental stimulation, doing physical movements in a different manner will actually increase your memory. Try brushing your teeth, or combing your hair with your less dominant hand. Throwing a ball or throwing a Frisbee will also be a challenge. Golfers try putting using the reverse grip that has become very popular on the Pro Golf tour. Challenges like these will keep your brain from getting complacent, by forcing you to use your faculties in unusual ways. You might also try showering, or getting dressed, with your eyes closed.

Moderate physical exercise can improve memory function. There are so many medical reports and University studies that state the same thing over and over again, “physical activity translates into better memory function”. By simply starting a walking program and build yourself up to 45 to 60 min. three times a week will get you started on your memory improvement journey.Exercising boosts your strength, and exercising your mind boosts memory.

Whether you are doing physical exercise, or working a crossword puzzle, you can reap the benefits if you are diligent. As with any good muscle, the more the brain is worked out, the stronger it will become.Doing nothing will accomplish nothing, so get started today.
