Exmoor Coastal Region A Rugged Wild Landscape

The scenic coastline runs over 37 miles within the National Park boasting some of the most beautiful stretches of coast that have inspires many painters and novelist over the centuries. The wildlife on the coast is one of the main reasons for giving Exmoor its national park status with the highest sheer cliff in all of England and Wales called the Great Hangman at 244 meters and at the highest point it reaches 433 meters at Culborne Hill and preserves some of the rarest wildlife in the United Kingdom.

The Coast is especially sheltered and therefore develops coastal woodlands and has the long stretch between Porlock and The Foreland, although it can be viewed it is incredibly inaccessible and is left to vegetate naturally and unchanged for thousands of years it has a unique Whitebeam species of plant life as well as supporting many rare and endangered species.

The Coastal villages were busy harbours but now are just tranquil communities attracting holiday makers and tourists. There are some unseen pressures mounting on the villages in the coastal areas although most would say the villages that have problems with roads and parking have problems the natural erosion through wind sea and rain is what is changing the face of the coastal landscape. Alongside the issue of parking is the changing face of the coastal industry with small fishing businesses all but extinct, the coastal villages allow their visitors nostalgia for a more localised time before corporations and the world wide web.

Near Porlock bay a main coastal path has had to be restored by local volunteers so that you can tread in the footstep of the first visitors to the area and enjoy some of the peace they came to the coast for. For those who find walking difficult and wanted to see a lot of the coast in comfort then travelling on the coastal railway near Lynmouth is truly breath taking especially on a windy day.
