Explore The Cherokee Foothills Scenic Byway

For a great glimpse of fall color and some breathtaking views, head across the Upcountry of South Carolina on the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Byway. Known also as SC Route 11, the road winds along the southern peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountain for 115 miles. Travelers may begin their journey off I-85 at Gaffney and drive west, or start at I-85 on the Georgia-South Carolina border near Lake Hartwell and go east. The Cherokee Foothills Scenic Byway is a pleasant alternative to the Interstate.

The northwest corner of the state is one of South Carolina’s most scenic areas. A leisurely drive will allow the traveler to enjoy the scenic views and stop to explore various points of interest along the way. Several state parks, an historic Revolutionary War site, and lovely mountain lakes offer travelers a chance to get out of the car and enjoy nature. There are plenty of areas to hike, view waterfalls, fish, and camp. The drive can be extended over a two or three day period to really have time to appreciate all the scenic stops along the way.

Cowpens National Battlefield is located near the eastern end of the route. This Revolutionary War site commemorates an American victory over the British that was a turning point of the war in the southern colonies. Farther west along the route travelers will find Jones Gap and Caesars Head State Parks. A trail connects the two parks, and hikers may explore secluded mountain coves and spectacular waterfalls. Bird watchers may enjoy spotting hawks, eagles, and other birds of prey in the area. Continue driving west to visit Table Rock State Park. Its 3,266 foot granite outcropping is the state’s most photographed natural wonder. Devils Fork State Park, just off the scenic byway, has the only public access to pristine Lake Jocassee, a largely undeveloped mountain lake. Overlooking popular Lake Keowee, the Keowee-Toxaway State Natural Area is a great place to fish. Oconee State Park, Oconee Station State Historic Site, and Lake Hartwell State Recreation Area are located near the western end of the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Byway.

Autumn is a great time of year to enjoy a drive along the picturesque route. In addition to spectacular leaf color, travelers to the area will find that apples are in season. Several orchards in the Upcountry welcome visitors to their roadside stands. Fall weather, with its sunny days and cool nights, encourages travelers to get outdoors and experience nature. Take plenty of photos and enjoy the Upcountry of South Carolina and the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Byway.
