Explore The Exotic With Far East Cruises

Indulging in a cruise around the Far East may well be one of the most unforgettable experiences a traveller can have.

There are few other regions that offer the same striking combination of ancient architecture and culture and super-modern urban centres - all of which can be taken in on a cruise spread over several weeks.

Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong are our main highlights for this week, with next week's article looking at Japan and other hot destinations in the Far East.

Shanghai is one of the most popular tourist destinations in China and a potential stop for an onshore excursion if you are visiting the country on a cruise.

The city is the largest in China and as such is bursting at the seams with attractions, interesting architecture, restaurants, shops and events to take in - so it might serve you well to do your research well in advance of setting foot in the metropolis.

Other top stops on a cruise to China include Tianjin, which is 85 miles south-east of the capital, Beijing, and is home to sights such as the Shi Family Grand Courtyard, Dagu Fort and the Tianjin Tropical Plant Garden.

Elsewhere, Dalian is a particularly attractive tourist hotspot as it has a climate somewhat more temperate than other parts of China and hosts regular events and festivals due to its status as a busy port taking in arrivals from around the world.

City-lovers should take to Hong Kong enormously - this ultra-hip city-state is known for its plentiful shopping, food festivals and top attractions such as its giant Buddha statue and The Peak, from which tourists can get a good look at the awe-inspiring vista of Hong Kong's city skyline and Victoria Harbour.

Meanwhile, some cruises to China also make a stop at Taipei in Taiwan. The city is well-stocked with shopping malls and department stores and also plays host to a number of night markets selling all kinds of local produce, most notably snacks and cheap clothing.

Make sure to also check out Yangmingshan National Park, a beautiful area of natural beauty containing hot springs and a huge clock made entirely of flowers.
