Extraordinary Memories Found Only In The Frozen Continent

Carefully, I stepped from the cruise liner's gangway, waiting for the swelling waves to break before I did my stunt. To be in my tiny rubber boat, I took one fast stride. Within minutes, our small group of tourists bounces by floating chunks of strikingly blue ice and a napping seal. Finally, the boat stops on a rocky beach, so my legs are swung above the zodiac to step onto the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula.

A precious sight complemented by a strong guano smell overcame me as I walked along the beach, laden with large blocks of ice. Adelie penguins waddled in front of me, and even around me. Numbers stretching up a rocky slope, much farther than what my naked eyes can behold. Our journey to the continents that are very far proves to be paying off, even the infamously rough sea cruise for two days from Ushuaia Argentina. Increasingly, travelers worldwide are realizing this vast crystalline wilderness at the bottom of the world is well worth the trouble to visit.

Each year, numbers of tourists increase and just in the past year, 26,000 were able to see it for themselves. Lectures on global sneaky penguins seem to break swirling blue patterns. The weather is extremely pleasant during the Decembers of the austral summer even as this continent is known to be the world's coldest. Going way beyond 40s in the area of the peninsula, temperatures can reach beyond freezing. The time when trips usually run is from November to March.

This ship, 100 meters long goes on an 11 day cruise with its tough exterior and is always almost full, capable of welcoming around a hundred passengers on board. The ship is not fancy at all, but it is extremely comfy. It has a bar and lounge with a small library and an auditorium. Tiny yachts are enough to go on an Antarctic trip. Come Friday evening, we sail away from the port. We cannot wait for the next day for it is when we get to see glorious birds in flight from the southern seas, especially the strong albatross.

An artist that teaches passengers to draw and paint penguins or icebergs along with lectures from a historian, geologist, bird specialist, marine biologist are some of the ways tour guides may the stay on the cruise trip exciting. Even as global warming was in discussions usually, it came as a bug surprise that lectures on it was never present at all on this trip.

Much of the trips' highlights took place in nearby islands as well as in landings on the continent. Unforgettable experiences include staring at an avalanche from afar or perhaps being docile to the thunderous boom of an iceberg calving. A lot can be viewed right from the decks of the ship. Travelers are able to maximize their trip with the shorter hours for darkness.

It would be a cinch to be spending most of your time on deck, watching a huge array of icebergs crafted by the wind as they drift by, some brilliant white, others blue, but make sure that you are dressed to keep warm against drafts. We marveled as we passed through white landscapes of high mountains with hanging glaciers like jewels. Whales also rise up into view occasionally. Glorious red and orange paint the skies during a nice long sunset.

One elderly passenger needed to be evacuated soon after getting so sick and this shocked us as we got back on our cruise liner. This entails we get an airstrip by going back to the South Shetland Islands only after a long, excruciating overnight detour. Instances like these, evacuations that cost so much money give travelers a reason to ponder on getting that medical evacuation insurance before anything else.

As soon as the passenger was sent to Chile for his evacuation, we found our way to Ardley Island, where Gentoo chicks were being fed by their penguin parents. Feeding a baby penguin calls for the adult penguin to delicately cover the head of the young with its beak cautiously regurgitating a snack of krill and after, a slime strand connects the mouth of the young to its parent.
