Extreme Goal Setting And Getting

For some time now, I’ve been into what I have loosely termed "Extreme Goal Setting". I’ve always been a goal setter, but I found that accountability and consequences were needed for me to really succeed. So, I started to facilitate groups in which we set action plans to achieve goals, and consequences for not completing our commitments. At first, the result, for me, was a lot of waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and hurrying to finish a "forgotten" action step for the day. Stressful, yes; but VERY effective at keeping me on track to achieve my goals.

If you want to try Extreme Goal Setting, here's how you can do it:

• Find at least one supportive friend to help you. The friend needs to be good at cheering you on, celebrating your successes, and holding you accountable by asking the tough questions (like did you get everything done that you said you would).

• Set a goal! It can be a short-term goal, like for the current month, or a long-term goal. An example of a goal would be "I want to lose 10 pounds by the end of November".

• Next, you need to decide what action steps would move you towards your goal. These are the actions or activities that need to be completed to achieve your goal. For example, to lose weight, you could choose 30 minutes of daily activity as one of your action steps.

• Now, for me, the most important part is to find a consequence that is truly dreadful. Mine have been what got me out of bed at 2 a.m. on more than one occasion to complete a task that I had not done earlier that day. If the thought of actually having to face the consequence is unacceptable to you, then you know you have the right motivator! I won't tell you what mine have been, but other people have used early morning meetings or cooking for their entire staff for a week as consequences.

Once you have set up your plan, the only thing left to do is achieve! Happy goal setting!
